With growing ages, your vision of eyes weakens. If not treated during it early time, partially or completely loss of vision may happen. It is reported that 80% of blinds include those who are above 50 years of age. Adults suffer from severe eye-related problems like blur vision, itching, swelling. These eye conditions develop serious problems in later life.

Major Eye Problems in the 50s

The 3 common eye problems in adults after 50 are:

1.  Cataracts

Cataracts are clouding in the lens of the eye. Normally the eye’s lens is clear, similar to the lens of the camera. It causes blurry vision or creates double vision. Usually, cataracts form without pain or redness. Its formation, in the beginning, is slow but later if they become thick and large, it affects eye vision. Age is the major factor causing cataracts. It develops after 50 when the lens proteins begin to break. Cataracts can be removed by surgery. Doctors take out the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial lens.

2.  Dry Eyes

Dry eyes are the condition in which one or both the tears of the eyes are unable to produce enough lubrication. This leads to inflammation in the eyes. It creates discomfort and forms a burning sensation in the eyes. Dry eyes may be experienced when you travel in an aeroplane, in presence of an air conditioner, on a bike and using mobile phones and computers.

Few symptoms like redness, eye fatigue, burning, stinging, difficulty in wearing contact lenses, and sensitivity to light are caused by dry eye. These start to develop after 50 as dry eyes are very common in people who are over 50. It can be prevented by following a few things like quitting smoking, using eye drops for lubrication, and taking eye breaks from using mobile and computers.

3.  Macular degeneration

Macular is the portion of the retina and contains millions of nerve cells. These nerve cells are sensitive to light. Macular degeneration is the loss of these cells and causes blurry vision. If it advances then there is no treatment but it can be cured in its initial stage. Macular degeneration is the major cause of complete blindness among people adobe 50 years of age. It can also develop due to some environmental factors. It can be treated by laser therapy, anti-angiogenic drugs and photodynamic laser therapy.

If you are above the age of 50 and have these common eye problems then consult the eye doctor regularly.
